Holgrave soon reveals the history of the Pyncheon family to Phoebe. He tells her that he has been collecting information in order to a publish a story on the Pyncheon family history, and details to her the story of Alice Pyncheon. Several generations before, Gervayse Pyncheon, the grandson of Colonel Pyncheon, summoned the grandson of Matthew Maule (who shares the name of his ancestor) to the House of the Seven Gables. He wanted to find a hidden map and deed to land in the eastern part of Maine.

Brief Biography of Nathaniel Hawthorne

It is here that his relationship with Herman Melville would blossom. While living in Lenox, Hawthorne wrote A Wonder Book for Girls and Boys as well as the famed Gothic novel, The House of the Seven Gables. By 1846, the Hawthorne family was living back in Salem with Una (1844) and Julian (1846).

She has been forced to do so because of a decline in the family fortune that reduced her to poverty. Her most prominent feature is an angry scowl, caused not by any ill temper, but rather because of vision problems. Another customer, the young daguerreotypist Mr. Holgrave, is a boarder in the House of the Seven Gables and Hepzibah's only friend.

Clark Gable’s ranch was originally built in 1933 for director and founding member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Raoul Walsh. When they heard that he was planning on selling the site, they jumped at the chance to purchase it, which they did in 1939, shortly after their nuptials, for a cool $50,000. Tabloids quickly labeled the two-story clapboard residence “The House of Two Gables”. The Colonial Revival seaside gardens capture the charm of four centuries of gardening in New England. The raised-bed areas of the garden are considered to be the most historically significant feature of the grounds.

The Uptons sold the property after moving to the Salem Willows neighborhood. Caroline Emmerton, a philanthropist and preservationist, founded The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association to assist immigrant families who were settling in Salem in the early 20th century. Inspired by Jane Addam’s Hull House, she purchased the “old Turner Mansion” in 1908 and worked with architect Joseph Everett Chandler to restore its perceived original appearance. Chandler was a central figure in the early 20th-century historic preservation movement and his philosophy influenced the way the house was preserved. After years of Hepzibah trying, the governor finally releases Clifford from prison, whereupon he returns to the Pyncheon house.

Lombard tragically passed away in a plane crash just two years later, on January 16th, 1942, and it is said that Gable never recovered from his grief. What began as a desire to bring higher standards to an industry that, at the time, was plagued with mediocrity, the founders of Seven Gables Real Estate had a clear purpose of doing real estate differently. The original part of the home featured a two-over-two floor plan around a large, central chimney. Turner’s success in business allowed him to construct two additions before his death in 1680, including the great ell that featured grand proportions, high ceilings and enormous windows. Over the last nearly 120 years, settlement work has changed with the needs of the groups it serves. After the book’s publication in 1850, the Hawthorne family would leave Salem once again for Lenox, Mass.

Settlements often provided services such as daycare, education and healthcare to improve the lives of the poor,” according to the group’s website. Hepzibah refuses assistance because she wants to protect Clifford from Jaffrey. The judge threatens to have Clifford commited because he wants the dded to the lost land and believes that Clifford knows where it is. Her birth house still stands on Summer Street and her home as an adult can still be seen today on Essex Street.

Four windows of the original ground-floor room (which became a dining room) remain in the house's side wall. Judge Pyncheon arrives at the house hoping to find information about land in Maine, rumored to belong to the family. He threatens Clifford with an insanity hearing unless he reveals details about the land or the location of the missing deed. Before Clifford can be brought before the Judge (which would destroy Clifford's fragile psyche), the Judge mysteriously dies while sitting in Colonel Pyncheon's chair. The next day, Phoebe returns and finds that Holgrave has discovered the Judge's body.

These documents — such as letters, trial transcriptions and court orders — were entrusted to the museum by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for safekeeping. Some can be viewed and read online here, while a few works of art connected to the trials are on view in the American Art galleries at PEM. Look for the dramatic painting, “Trial of George Jacobs, August 5, 1692” by Tompkins Harrison Matteson, 1855. Jacobs pleads with the court, on his knees, his walking stick nearby. Between May 1692 and March 1693, 200 innocent people from the Salem region were accused, 25 sentenced to death, 19 hanged and one man pressed to death. A visit to PEM’s Phillips Library Reading Room in nearby Rowley is a special occasion for authors, researchers and history buffs.

Your adventure and historical journey await you at The Houseof the Seven Gables in Salem, Massachusetts. The Rebecca Nurse Homestead is in a part of Danvers that was once Salem. This house is (1) the only home of a person executed for witchcraft open to the public and (2) the only known burial site of any of those executed in 1692.

People love to check out Samantha, the 6-foot bronze statue in downtown Salem. Even Phoebe’s presence cannot free Clifford and Hepzibah from the terror inspired by a visit from their cousin, Judge Pyncheon. He greets Hepzibah warmly and offers her financial support, but she furiously blocks the Judge’s way into the house, while, from inside, Clifford begs him to go away. Even the normally unflappable Phoebe experiences a moment of revulsion when the Judge greets her.

In 1668, wealthy merchant and shipowner John Turner I, and his wife Elizabeth Robinson Turner, built the house that is now one of the oldest timber-framed mansions in continental North America. When Gerald decides not to sell the house after all, Clifford and his father argue violently. Gerald dies of a heart attack, and strikes his head as he falls. Jaffrey, knowing Clifford is innocent, nonetheless accuses him of murder. Clifford is convicted and imprisoned, but renews "Maule's curse" upon Jaffrey before being led away. Gerald's will gives all three children sizeable yearly incomes, but leaves the house to Hepzibah.

Halfway down a by-street of one of our New England towns stands a rusty wooden house, with seven acutely peaked gables, facing towards various points of the compass, and a huge, clustered chimney in the midst. The street is Pyncheon Street; the house is the old Pyncheon House; and an elm-tree, of wide circumference, rooted before the door, is familiar to every town-born child by the title of the Pyncheon Elm. The restaurant chain was first founded in 1975 in Long Beach, California, by Harlem native Herb Hudson. It currently operates eight locations, with its newest location in West LA.

The townsfolk begin to gossip about Hepzibah and Clifford's sudden disappearance. Phoebe is relieved when Hepzibah and Clifford return, having recovered their wits. Who would imagine that the Gardner-Pingree House, a masterpiece by architect Samuel McIntire, would be the setting of the savage murder of a rich, old sea captain? Before you climb the elegant staircase to Capt. Joseph White’s bedroom, you will learn about the McIntire carving, the parties that didn’t end till dawn and White’s illegal slave trade. Impulsive and unpleasant, the 82-year-old was not beloved in Salem. Richard hanged himself in jail, and Joe and Frank Knapp were found guilty and hanged.

Proctor’s Ledge is a somber memorial at the site where 19 Salem residents were hanged in 1692. The names of all 19 innocent victims killed are inscribed on stone plaques. In July five women, the first of the 19 women and men, were hanged from a tree, then dropped into a crevice and loosely covered with soil. Those accused of practicing witchcraft and executed were not allowed a Christian burial. Some have said that grieving family members came after dark to retrieve the bodies of their loved ones. They could be heard crying quietly as they went about the heartbreaking task of recovering bodies.

The house was built on ground wrongfully seized from its rightful owner, Matthew Maule, by Colonel Pyncheon, the founder of the Massachusetts branch of the family. According to legend, at the time of his death Maule laid a curse upon the Pyncheon family. During the housewarming festivities, Colonel Pyncheon was found dead in his armchair; whether he actually died from the curse or from a congenital disease is unclear. His portrait remains in the house as a symbol of its dark past and the weight of the curse upon the spirit of its inhabitants. Think morning-to-night festivities punctuated by raucous moments and jaw-dropping creativity. There are ways around the lack of parking and long waiting lines at popular venues.

The very day that she opens her shop, Hepzibah receives a visit from Phoebe, a young girl who is Hepzibah’s cousin through an extended branch of the Pyncheon family. At first, Hepzibah worries that Phoebe’s presence will upset Hepzibah’s brother, Clifford, who is returning home from prison. Phoebe’s charm and diligence prevail, however, and she finally convinces Hepzibah to let her stay.

Matthew Maule cast some sort of spell on her that rendered her under his control. While in a trance, Alice Pyncheon claimed that she knew the secret to the eastern land. Alice Pyncheon died from illness some time later when Matthew Maule ordered her to serve his fiancee and caused her to walk home in the rain. As Holgrave finishes his story, he realizes he has hypnotized Phoebe, but his integrity prevents him from abusing his power, and he wakes her from her trance. The Judge explains that Clifford knows the location of their late uncle’s inheritance.

It was during this time that he would begin to write The Scarlet Letter—his first critically acclaimed success in publishing. Hawthorne was influenced by the growing popularity of Transcendentalism. In 1841, he joined Brook Farm in West Roxbury and in 1842 moved into the Old Manse in Concord with Sophia.

Graphics show design of new Navy spy submarine, where it fits in fleet

submarine design

Ballistic missiles can also be fired from a submarine's torpedo tubes, for example, missiles such as the anti-submarine SUBROC. With internal volume as limited as ever and the desire to carry heavier warloads, the idea of the external launch tube was revived, usually for encapsulated missiles, with such tubes being placed between the internal pressure and outer streamlined hulls. The Imperial Japanese Navy operated the most varied fleet of submarines of any navy, including Kaiten crewed torpedoes, midget submarines (Type A Ko-hyoteki and Kairyu classes), medium-range submarines, purpose-built supply submarines and long-range fleet submarines. They also had submarines with the highest submerged speeds during World War II (I-201-class submarines) and submarines that could carry multiple aircraft (I-400-class submarines). They were also equipped with one of the most advanced torpedoes of the conflict, the oxygen-propelled Type 95. Nevertheless, despite their technical prowess, Japan chose to use its submarines for fleet warfare, and consequently were relatively unsuccessful, as warships were fast, maneuverable and well-defended compared to merchant ships.

Submarines

The diving planes have the facility of tilting to change the “lift,” which helps the submarine climb up or dive deep. Most of the time, the depth of the submarine is controlled using diving planes. The amount of lift generated by the submarine depends on the tilt angle of the planes and the speed of the submarine.

Engineering and auxiliary systems

A submarine submerged underwater can use Sonar by generating a small sound and then listening or detecting when the sound is reflected to map out or know its surroundings. However, emitting a sound from the submarine makes it easy for other ships or submarines to find its location. Hence, it is risky to use active Sonar when the submarine is on a secret mission.

Electric power

An example of the latter was the incident between the Russian K-276 and the USS Baton Rouge in February 1992. After putting to sea, the U-boats operated mostly on their own trying to find convoys in areas assigned to them by the High Command. If a convoy was found, the submarine did not attack immediately, but shadowed the convoy and radioed to the German Command to allow other submarines in the area to find the convoy.

submarine design

When a submarine performs emergency surfacing, all depth and trim methods are used simultaneously, together with propelling the boat upwards. Such surfacing is very quick, so the sub may even partially jump out of the water, potentially damaging submarine systems. A designer has to compile data of all such possibilities before starting the submarine design. Also, unlike a ship, a submarine has to move both on the surface and under the sea. A designer must think of submarine stability as a design factor both when it is at the surface and under the sea. Also, this shape gives more space, and it is easy to create multiple decks.

Design of submarines

The structure is to be so designed that the level of vibrations are well within the limits. The physics of underwater explosions is a very interesting subject, as in, it is remarkably unique when compared to an explosion in air. To understand it, watch the video below, and notice how the explosion ball is created and how it contracts and explodes again, to release a cloud of gas bubbles.

Nuclear propulsion and missile platforms

During the War of 1812, in 1814 Silas Halsey died while using a submarine in an unsuccessful attack on a British warship stationed in New London harbour. Towards the end of the 20th century, some submarines were fitted with pump-jet propulsors, instead of propellers. Although these are heavier, more expensive, and often less efficient than a propeller, they are significantly quieter, giving an important tactical advantage. The Chilean government commissioned the Flach in 1865, during the Chincha Islands War (1864–1866) when Chile and Peru fought against Spain. Built by the German engineer Karl Flach, the submarine sank during tests in Valparaiso Bay on May 3, 1866, with the entire eleven-man crew. The motor could have multiple armatures on the shaft, which could be electrically coupled in series for slow speed and in parallel for high speed (these connections were called "group down" and "group up", respectively).

Submarine captains are more likely to use radar detection gear than active radar to detect targets, as radar can be detected far beyond its own return range, revealing the submarine. Periscopes are rarely used, except for position fixes and to verify a contact's identity. With only the rear clutch engaged, the electric motor could drive the propeller, as required for fully submerged operation.

What leaves scope of research in this field is, submarines are not tested projects like many surface ships. Each design is new depending on the navy and other inter-related requirements of the project, and this leaves the designers with a lot of scope to improve on the next. The Nautilus was intended to attach an explosive charge to the hull of an enemy ship in much the same manner as the Turtle. Fulton experimentally sank an old schooner moored at Brest but, setting out to destroy British warships, was unable to overtake those he sighted.

Because in case of a ship, the rudder requires the propeller outflow for maximum lift efficiency. But in a submarine, since the entire hull is submerged, undisturbed streamlined flow is incident onto the rudder surface. Two hydroplanes mounted at the aft in the vertical plane are used to change the lateral direction of the submarine when in motion. Do note that unlike ships, the rudders of a submarine are forward of the propeller. The profile of the bridge fin in a submarine design is always an aerofoil shape, as it acts as a hydrofoil with the submarine sails with just the fin above water.

The study thus helps us conclude, that when a submarine is subjected to an explosion, it should be able to withstand not one, but a series of shockwaves. It has also been observed during tests, that due to each contraction of the explosion cloud, the submarine has a tendency to be sucked towards the centre of the explosion cloud. A submarine is designed to withstand the loads generated by underwater detonations (for example, mine explosions, pressures generated by bursting of large underwater gas bubbles). Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (Vingt mille lieues sous les mers, 1870) contains two of his most memorable creations, the mysterious Captain Nemo and a marvelous submarine, the Nautilus. This submarine is 70 metres (230 feet) long and armour-plated, capable of sinking any ship, and equipped with a 12,000-volume library and an art collection with works by Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, and Raphael.

France’s interest in Fulton’s submarine waned, and he left for England, offering his invention to his former enemy. In 1805 the Nautilus sank the brig Dorothy in a test, but the Royal Navy would not back his efforts. Fulton then came to the United States and succeeded in obtaining congressional backing for a more ambitious undersea craft.

With time, the type, range and bandwidth of the communications systems have increased. With the danger of interception, transmissions by a submarine are minimised. Various periscope-mounted aerials have been developed to allow communication without surfacing. Diesel submarines needed air to run their engines, and so carried very large batteries for submerged travel. Submarines also carry radar equipment to detect surface ships and aircraft.

Submarines did not have a major impact on the outcome of the war, but did portend their coming importance to naval warfare and increased interest in their use in naval warfare. In the 1930s, the principle was modified for some submarine designs, particularly those of the U.S. The engine was no longer attached to the motor/propeller drive shaft, but drove a separate generator, which would drive the motors on the surface and/or recharge the batteries.

One of a fleet of diesel electric submarines the Soviet Navy called “Project 641,” B-39 was commissioned in the early 1970s and served on active duty for more than 20 years. 300 feet in length and displacing more than 2000 tons, B-39 is among the largest conventionally powered submarines ever built. She was designed to track U.S. and NATO warships throughout the world’s oceans.

"Burning House" is a song recorded by American country music singer Cam. It was released on June 16, 2015, as the second single from her second album Untamed. Co-written by Cam along with Tyler Johnson and Jeff Bhasker, the song was inspired by a dream that she had about attempting to rescue her boyfriend from a house that was on fire. “Burning House” played a pivotal role in catapulting Cam into the spotlight. The song became her breakthrough hit, garnering attention from both fans and industry professionals. It showcased Cam’s unique talent and established her as a powerful force in the country music genre.

In a daily meeting convened by White House chief of staff Jeff Zients, the president’s top aides would brainstorm possible ways to better make the case about Ukraine’s dire situation in the absence of aid. Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has complained that European allies have not done enough for Ukraine. While the former president stopped short of endorsing the funding package, his tone has shifted in recent days, acknowledging that Ukraine’s survival is important to the United States. Tucked into the measure is a provision that gives TikTok’s Beijing-based parent company, ByteDance, nine months to sell it or face a nationwide prohibition in the United States. The administration and a bipartisan group of lawmakers have called the social media site a growing national security concern, which ByteDance denies. Still, longer term, it remains uncertain if Ukraine, after months of losses and massive damage to its infrastructure, can make enough progress to sustain American political support before burning through the latest influx of money.

The Loud children head back to the town on a rowboat and team up to defeat Morag and un-hypnotize Lela. Season 5 (2020–

The citizens of Loch Loud congratulate the family and ask Lincoln to resume his place as the duke of the kingdom, though Lincoln declines and instead offers the crown to Angus instead, feeling he deserves it more. This decision is approved by the citizens and the other ghosts of the Loud ancestors. Angus then shows the family members a painting of their ancestors that bears a striking resemblance to them and reveals they ruled the town for many years before sailing away forever. Lincoln eventually learns from Angus that his own ancestral counterpart, the Duke of the family, was the most special member of the family, much to his delight. Wanting to become the new Duke of Loch Loud, Lincoln partakes in many community service events to help restore the village to its former glory and eventually guilt-trips the rest of the family into moving to Scotland forever because they no longer have to share one bathroom.

Lisa and Lily's room has green walls and carpeting, one window, a closet, a desk with various scientific equipment on it, a nightstand with a lamp on top of it next to a bed with a dark green blanket, a small pink rug next to a crib with purple bedsheets and pillow, and prior to Season 5, a changing table. It is located opposite to Lori and Leni's room, and between the bathroom and Lynn and Lucy's room. The series was created by veteran animator Chris Savino and was inspired by his childhood.

However, not all episodes were directed by Savino; both digital shorts, "Slice of Life" and "Deuces Wild!" (Savino only wrote the shorts), and a few Season 2 episodes were directed solely by Marshall. The second season was greenlit on May 25, 2016 and consists of 26 episodes, beginning on November 9, 2016 with "Intern for the Worse"/"The Old and the Restless" and ended on December 1, 2017 with "Snow Way Out"/"Snow Way Down". After the sisters begin to get attention in the village, Morag tricks Lincoln into riding Lela to try to get back his attention. While he rides the dragon, she uses the gemstone and scepter to hypnotize it into destroying the town so Lincoln would be blamed for the chaos. Feeling guilty for the damage, Lincoln asks the family to return home to Royal Woods. As the family leaves for home, Morag proceeds to make herself the new duchess of the town much to the displeasure of villagers. In retaliation, she hypnotizes Lela again to cause more destruction to the village.

It entered production the following year.[3] The series is based on Savino's own childhood growing up in a large family, and its animation is largely influenced by newspaper comic strips. The Loud House is an American sitcomedy multimedia franchise, owned by Nickelodeon, following the chaotic everyday life of large families, in particular that of the eponymous Loud family. The franchise expanded to film with The Loud House Movie on August 20, 2021, followed by A Loud House Christmas on November 26, 2021, A Really Haunted Loud House on September 28, 2023, and The Casagrandes Movie on March 22, 2024. The series has spawned a multimedia franchise, including the spin-off series The Casagrandes, which aired from October 2019 to September 2022, an animated feature film that was released on Netflix in August 2021, a live-action television film that premiered in November 2021, and live-action series The Really Loud House that premiered in November 2022. Additionally, a second live-action television film A Really Haunted Loud House premiered in September 2023, as well as a second animated feature film, The Casagrandes Movie, which premiered in March 2024 on Netflix. The Loud House is an American animated television series and media franchise created by Chris Savino.

The themes by Christopher Lennertz and the official music by Phillip White, it features many songs sung by Oh, Hush! Jam Filled Entertainment, a Canadian-based animation studio located in Ottawa (now owned by Boat Rocker Media), animates the whole series digitally with Toon Boom Harmony software. Early in development, the Loud family was originally going to be a family of rabbits, and instead of 11 children, there were going to be 26, a reference to the fact that rabbits can reproduce so quickly. An employee at Nickelodeon suggested to Savino that it would be best if the characters were humans.

Before Leni became the character she is now, she was originally going to be an overweight 8-year-old who "didn't know her own strength." The decision to change Leni into who she is now is currently unknown, but one popular theory is that it was to make her fit in with the other characters, design wise. The first episode of The Loud House shown in prime time, "11 Louds a Leapin'," was the seventh most-viewed telecast across all U.S. households on Friday, November 25, 2016. Chris Savino based The Loud House on his own experiences growing up in a large family. He pitched the idea to Nickelodeon in 2013 as a 2½-minute short for their annual Animated Shorts Program.

It is produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studio and animated at Jam Filled Entertainment in Canada. The series is inspired by Savino's own "chaotic life growing up in a huge household," and follows a boy named Lincoln, who lives at home with his ten sisters, Lori, Leni, Luna, Luan, Lynn, Lucy, Lana, Lola, Lisa, and Lily. Lincoln Loud is the only boy and the middle child in a family of eleven children residing in the fictional town of Royal Woods, Michigan. He has ten sisters with distinctive personalities consisting of bossy eldest child Lori, ditzy fashionista Leni, musician Luna, comedian Luan, athletic Lynn Jr., gloomy poetic goth Lucy, polar opposite twins Lana and Lola, child genius Lisa, and baby Lily.

They are usually anthology comics, however, others are arranged on certain themes, while others have overarching storylines. The first graphic novel, There Will Be Chaos, was released on May 9, 2017.[93] There are currently two series, a running series and a special series focusing on the seasons and certain holidays. The Bathroom has beige walls, green carpeting, blue-gray walls, a black-and-white checkered floor, two small windows with the sink between them, a toilet, a shower, and a towel closet. It is located between Lori and Leni's room and Luna and Luan's room, and opposite to Lincoln's room. Lynn and Lucy's room has grayish yellow walls, dark green carpeting, and one window with red and black curtains, which splits the room into two sides, with Lynn's side containing a closet build into the room, pennants on the wall, and a bed with a red blanket, while Lucy's side has a mirror, a writing desk, and a bed with a black blanket and a high frame.

After a particularly successful day in which the sisters all win awards, they celebrate at Lynn Sr.'s restaurant. There, the Loud sisters are praised by fans while Lincoln is pushed to the side and ignored. Feeling that he is living in their shadows, he consults his friend Clyde McBride, who tells him about the time he learnt his grandmother's side of the family was from Paris. The Attic is comprised of exposed wood, two exposed light bulbs, a part of the chimney, and various old objects such as games, boxes, an old-fashioned television set, Lynn Sr.'s old camera, a cardboard box full of hand-me-downed clothes, and Lincoln's homemade coffee mugs.

It was in that spirit of respect that I used “Okie” in an Aug. 5 obituary for Salvador Avila, the co-founder of the Avila’s El Ranchito Mexican restaurant chain.
